Photo postcard with a portrait of Robert Baden-Powell in British military uniform during the Second Boer War. At bottom, he is declared the "Hero of Mafeking." The Siege of Mafeking (now Mafikeng), South Africa, took place over a period of 217 days, from October 1899 to May 1900. His brave actions there turned Baden-Powell into a British national hero. His renown aided in the spread of the Scouting Movement which he founded.
