Executive Director

World of Scouting Museum, Inc.

The World of Scouting Museum is searching for a highly motivated and self-directed professional to serve as the museum’s full-time executive director who will lead the museum through a transition from its current location to a new home on the campus of another nonprofit in Valley Forge. The museum has been in operation for over 10 years at its current location in Valley Forge National Park. The new location will allow the museum to grow, expand its exhibits and programs, and to better fulfill its mission of telling the story of the scouting movement, both in the United States and worldwide. The museum is a private, non-profit organization governed by a board of directors and is not affiliated with any scouting organization. The museum has a growing collection of scouting artifacts that tell the history of scouting from its very beginning to the present day. The executive director will be the first professional director of the organization and will be joined on the staff by a professional collections manager and supplemented by occasional consultants. Duties will include: managing the final design and construction process of the new museum quarters; supervising the collections manager and developing professional collections management policies and practices as well as working with collectors to further enhance the core collection; working with the board on fundraising (both operational and capital); assisting the board chair in the transition from a founding/working board to a board that concentrates on institutional development; managing the relationship between the museum and the host nonprofit; working with board, staff, and consultants to develop the core exhibit for the new museum; developing exhibition topics for a small temporary exhibition area; developing educational outreach programs; budget and financial management; marketing and public relations; representing the museum to the general public, to funders, and to the scouting world at large. Qualifications: MA in history or museum studies or equivalent; experience working in a supervisory position in a museum or educational institution; experience in working directly with a board; fundraising and grant-writing experience; knowledge of non-profit management, budgeting, and finance; ability to motivate and work well with volunteers; excellent writing and public speaking skills; familiarity with and affinity for scouting highly desirable.
